This morning's weekly meeting included presentations by 3 club members of family members that bravely served their country during either World War 1 or World War 2.  Thomas Newby brought a photograph of his grandfather, and Geoff and Deb Allen brought audio/video recollections of both of their fathers.  Deb followed up with some information on her own service, for 8 years, with Guelph's own 11th Field Regiment.

Geoff provided a little history lesson, explaining "Armistice Day":

"Armistice Day is commemorated every year on November 11 to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War and Germany for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War 1, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning - the 'eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month' of 1918.  The date was declared a national holiday in many allied nations, and coincides with Remembrance Day and Veterans Day.  The first Armistice Day was held at Buckingham Palace, commencing with King George V hosting a "Banquet in Honour of the President of the French Republic" during the evening hours of 10 November 1919.  The first official Armistice Day events were subsequently held in the grounds of Buckingham Palace on the morning of 11 November 1919.  This would set the trend for a day of Remembrance for decades to come."
